#PowderRoomProject
If you told me a couple of weeks before this remodel that #PowderRoomProject would have been trending, at least locally, I wouldn’t have believed it! But after seeing this transformation and knowing how much fun it was to bring this space to life, I totally get it now!
Where We Started . . .
Admittedly, nothing was exciting about this powder room. After all, it is simply a place to make use of facilities, right? However, after getting a chance to meet with the homeowners, seeing how awesome their personalities are, and learning a little more about their vision for the space, I knew that this was going to be a fun project!
These homeowners are not afraid of color! So now, it was time to start making their house reflect their fearlessness of infusing who they are into their forever home.
The Design Process
During consultations, it’s important to really listen to the homeowner, and pay just as much attention to the things said as the things unsaid (body language).
For this project, we’d first thought that doing a simple refresh of the powder room would suffice: painting the wall tile a different color, possibly applying peel-and-stick flooring, and changing out the fixtures. But, as the homeowners continued to share with me their vision for this space and how they wanted to get away from temporary fixes in their home, I knew this project would involve a bit more work. And, I was up for the challenge!
From the notes I gathered during the consultation and the homeowner telling me they trusted my vision with the space, I went to work almost immediately building out the design plan. I really wanted this powder room to reflect the family, infusing more of who they are into their new forever home!
The top three things the homeowner desired for their powder room were:
The use of bold color
A wallpaper - painted or traditional - would be used to bring in fun movement through patterns.
Have the space reflect the mood and vibe of one of their favorite hotel restaurants.
This powder room had to exude quirky luxury! And although small, this room had to make a big statement!
And now, it was time to nail down the design proposal and assemble the dream team to make it happen! But first, inspiration . . .
Where We Are Now!
For this project - and well, for all of my projects for that matter - I really wanted to nail the design and incorporate every element the family desired in this space! During the consultation, they mentioned that Bishop Memphis was one of their favorite restaurants, and they would like to see a bit of that aesthetic in the powder room.
Through the use of a moody, yet bold paint color, elegantly patterned wallpaper (inspired by the flooring), and sleek brass fixtures, I channeled inspiration from this beautiful restaurant to be able to design the powder room this awesome family deserved!
To bring this concept to life, I teamed up with Handyman Pro! Through Instagram, I’d been studying and admiring their work for about a year now. From the quality of their work to the fun they have while on the job, I knew I wanted to work with them, I just had to find the right project. THIS was the perfect opportunity to bring them in to work their magic!
From start to finish, we had a blast, and just as I’d witnessed from their IG account, their work is of superb quality! We learned from each other, and grew even more from the #PowderRoomProject!
Thinking of Transforming a (Small) Space in Your Home?
If so, here are some things to consider.
Don’t be afraid of color and/or pattern: whether you’re renting or you own your home, your space should reflect who you are. If you like vibrant colors and bold patterns, small spaces like a bathroom are perfect for experimenting with a bit of fearless design.
Small doesn’t always mean inexpensive (this is something I learned from Handyman Pro): If you’re going to need the help of contractors to bring your vision to life, working in a small space won’t necessarily equate to a small price tag. You have to consider changes you’ll be making, how accessible the space is for 2 or more workers, and the materials you choose. If the materials are a little harder to work with, then paying for a contractor’s expertise and precision in work is also a line item.
Temporary isn’t bad: If you are renting but you still want to see an impactful change in your space -
Opt for materials like peel-and-stick wallpaper and flooring (and yes, there are humidity-safe options out there for bathrooms)
Change out your accessories and/or small furniture. Whether it’s new bath towels a funky pattern or changing out a mirror, little changes can have a big impact. Too, when you’re ready to move, these are items you can take with you!
If painting is allowed, just make sure you have a supply of the original color to paint once you leave. However, it could be that your interior updates are so beautiful, your dwelling’s management won’t want to change a thing!
If there’s one lesson learned from this project - other than you CAN have the most fun while at work - it’s that your home should always reflect who you are and what/who you love. Ultimately, our homes are an extension of who we are and how we communicate our presence. When curating your home, you are the one who makes and can break the design rules, not anyone else.
So if there’s a project you’ve been meaning to tackle but feel a little intimidated to take on, just go for it! The worst thing that can happen is that you have to change it and make it even better. And if you’re still on the fence about what to do or how to start . . . I think you know who to call ;-).
